Computex is typically ASUS' show. Every year, the Taiwanese company takes to Taipei to unload a host of its wares and, in the process, steal the lion's share of the show's headlines. Well, 2016 is no different as ASUS has taken the wraps off a slew of devices including an ultraportable that's thinner than Apple's own MacBook, Surface-like 2-in-1 PCs, three new ZenFones, a charming robot assistant for the home and a me-too mobile VR headset.
ASUS ZenBook 3
Move over, Apple MacBook -- there's a new ultraskinny portable in town. ASUS' lightweight laptop has gotten even more svelte in its third iteration. Thanks to a new "aerospace-grade aluminum alloy," the company was able to shave the ZenBook 3's heft down to 2lbs and shrink its thickness to 11.9mm (0.46 inches). With an Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB PCIe SSD all included on the top-end model, this ZenBook 3 pushes past Apple's best effort, with a larger display too.
ASUS Transformer 3 line
If you think there's something familiar about ASUS' new line of Transformer 3 tablets, you're not wrong: there's a very Microsoft Surface-like vibe about it all. With touchscreens, kickstands (on all, but one model), portable keyboards and Windows 10, it's hard to miss the similarities.
Both the Transformer 3 Pro and Transformer 3 pack 12.6-inch displays with a 2880 x 1920 resolution, as well as USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3 ports.
While the Mini model has a 10.1-inch display, 8.2mm thickness and a built-in fingerprint reader just like its bigger bro, the Transformer 3.
ASUS ZenFone 3
For its ZenFone 3, ASUS has rolled out a model to match most every budget: the regular 'ol ZenFone 3, the Deluxe and, for heavy-hitters, the Ultra.
All three ZenFone 3 models run Android M, but that's where the similarities end. The glass-encased ZenFone 3 packs a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display, Snapdragon 625 clocked at 2GHz, a 3,000mAh batt, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. It also features a USB type-C port and 16-megapixel rear camera.
For the Deluxe, ASUS opted for a metal unibody, a larger 5.7-inch 1080p AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 820 and a 23-megapixel rear camera capable of 4K recording.
Lastly, for people who just need that much more phone, ASUS' ZenFone 3 Ultra ups the ante by packing a whoppinh 6.8-inch 1080p LCD display, DTS Headphone:X 7.1 surround sound, a massive 4600mAh battery and an octacore Snapdragon 652.
ASUS Zenbo
Amazon's got Echo. Google's got Home. And now ASUS has Zenbo. While it's not a stationary AI-helper like those rival models, ASUS' home bot does many of the same tricks: It can connect to and control your smart home, help with shopping, make video calls and stream content from its touchscreen-face. It's also being positioned as an assistant to the more senior members of our population, which explains those doe eyes.
ASUS VR headset
This one was expected. Tucked away in a corner of ASUS' booth was this premium-looking Gear VR rival. Though not much is known about ASUS' mobile VR unit, it's expected to run using a compatible ZenFone, and features a metal body and what looks to be leather straps (fancy!). We're guessing we'll find out more about this VR looker come IFA this summer.
ASUS ROG Avalon
Most hardcore PC gamers prefer to build their own rigs, but not everyone's up for the challenge. Enter ASUS' Republic of Gamers prototype, the Avalon. This cube-like rig combines a motherboard and chassis into one so all you have to worry about is slotting in your chosen internals -- from the front, no less.
ASUS ROG GX800
Overclockers will be familiar with this one. ASUS' ROG GX800 is an update to last year's liquid-cooled gaming laptop, the GX700. The massive cooling attachment remains unchanged on back, but now the laptop's powered by an NVIDIA SLI GPU, Intel's overclock-friendly K-series CPU and two 330W power supplies. There's also a customizable, multicolor LED mechanical keyboard -- if you're into that sort of thing.
